Paquita
May 31st, 2024 at 7pm and June 1st, 2024 at 4pm
Ballet Conservatory of Asheville presents the Ballet Paquita. Music is by Edouard Delvedez and Ludwig Minkus, and choreography is after Pierre Lacotte, Joseph Mazilier and Marius Petipa. The ballet Paquita is mostly a mystery. Only three main dance sections have survived within ballet’s historic repertoire. The surviving dance sections include the Grand Pas, Pas de trois, and Children’s Mazurka. All three boast beautiful music and enduring choreography which are frequently used as shorter concert pieces. A few companies have linked together their own original stories based on the original dances and some details passed down through the years. In this version: Baby Paquita is lost from her family, but found by a traveling show group who raise her to become lead dancer of their band. They arrive in a new town and she is instantly drawn to a local royal family, befriending their prince. The leader becomes jealous of the royal prince who is already engaged to marry. The leader plots with the fiancé’s brother against the royal prince. Paquita helps foil the plot and then discovers that she is a lost child of the royal family and is able to marry the Prince.
